Bages

The Bages region strong character is defined by its wheat fields and vines, small hamlets with cobbled streets and over a thousand metres high peaks.

The Salt Mountain is one of the Cardona most important tourist attractions. The result of the drying up of an ancient inland sea, open cast salt mining dates from Neolithic times and continued until the constant fall in prices caused its closure as recently as the 1990s.

For over five hundred years, a walled keep protected the riches of Cardona. But nowadays, this beautiful town throws the doors to its old town, declared a Site of National Cultural Interest in 1992. Cardona Castle, an 11th-century fortress on the borders of Al-Andalus and which played a vitally important strategic role during the War of the Spanish Succession.

Very close by, in Manresa, the old Sant Ignasi School is a 17th-century building that houses the Regional Museum and its impressive baroque art collection. Once you’ve seen the museum, make sure you visit Saint Ignatius’ Cave (a sanctuary), Carrer del Balç (a famous medieval street) and, of course, the Gothic Basilica of Santa Maria, also known as La Seu, which is the most important historical building in the capital of Bages.  

To listen to the boys’ choir singing the Salve and Virolai at the Basílica of Montserrat is a unique experience! And if you want to enjoy some spectacular views, climb up to the summit of Sant Jeroni at 1,224 metres.
