El Pallars Sobirà

El Pallars Sobirà

Pallars Sobirà is a high mountain area characterized by its scenic wealth and its small picture-postcard villages. Walk through its paths up to the largest lake in the Pyrenees (Certascan) or to the highest peak in Catalonia (Pica d’Estats) and enjoy the waters of Noguera Pallaresa, one of the best European rivers to practise rafting and other adventure sports.

In this region of the Pyrenees, shepherding has been vital for the maintenance of ecosystems of high ecological and environmental value. This destination is home to families of farmers who take care of flocks of Xisqueta native sheep and to artisans who turn their wool into decorative objects or items of clothes.

A lively way to know about those ancestral occupations is to go shepherding together with local shepherds or to create an object in the company of wool artisans. You can also learn about the occupation of shepherds at the Shepherd Museum in Llessui or about the Pyrenean lifestyle in the early 19th century at Valls d’Àneu Ecomuseum, in Esterri d’Àneu.
